Project Details
Overview
The Gap Rome flagship is a cultural exchange between clean American modernism and Rome’s architectural richness. Housed in a historic structure, the design embraces the building’s original patina while introducing a fresh, optimistic language. The result is a global flagship that feels deeply local and timeless.

Outcome
The existing historic staircase became the anchor of the entire design. Rather than replace it, the team restored and celebrated it — stone treads, ironwork, and time-worn details intact. A vertical narrative connecting Gap's modern identity to Rome's architectural legacy.

Part of Gap Inc.'s coordinated global flagship strategy in 2011, opening alongside the Ginza location in Tokyo. Craig Trettau directed retail format design at VP level across both markets. The Rome store established Gap's presence on one of the city's highest-traffic retail corridors while navigating strict historic preservation requirements within a protected structure.
